SELF applies zero-knowledge, client-side encryption to protected content including AI conversations and memory, Messenger content and attachments, Vault files and metadata, Calendar event content, mail between SELF accounts, and chain validator private keys. The server stores ciphertext for these categories, while the keys required to read it remain on the user’s device.
Core Principles:
- Client-Held Keys: A 12-word BIP39 recovery phrase generated at registration derives the encryption key hierarchy on the user’s device
- Passwordless Authentication: WebAuthn passkeys authenticate the user and provide a phishing-resistant sign-in experience
- Multi-Device Access: The recovery phrase restores the same encryption keys on another device, while passkeys provide authentication on supported devices
- Industry Standards: WebAuthn, the WebCrypto API, AES-256-GCM, and ECDH key exchange
- Durable Recovery: The recovery phrase remains essential for recovering encrypted data and should be stored safely
What This Means:
- Your Private Content Stays Protected: The listed content is encrypted on the device before transmission. SELF holds ciphertext, and decryption keys stay on the user’s device
- Your AI Runs on SELF Infrastructure: SELF serves conversations from dedicated GPUs it controls. Optional web search and URL reading send the user’s query to an external data provider only when the user chooses that action
- Your Message Content Is End-to-End Encrypted: Direct and group message content and attachments are encrypted on the device. Routing identifiers and timing remain available to the service for delivery
- Your Identity Has a Clear Privacy Boundary: Registration uses email as the account identifier. Email is encrypted at rest with a server-held key so SELF can use it for contact and account recovery
- Your Wallet Keeps You in Control: Signing keys stay on the user’s device. Wallet addresses and blockchain transactions remain public by design
